Ernest (nicknamed "Ernie") quit school to go to work and help support the family, as did Ernie's sisters that were living at home. In 1920, Ernie was working as a night watchman at a pickle factory. After marrying Mildred, they built a new house for his mother, Hattie, on Oak Street in Kankakee. Ernest and Mildred ran a successful hog farm at RR7 on Skyline Road in Kankakee until they retired to Dunedin, Florida in the early 1980's.Their first child, Ernest Jay Miller, Jr. died within 10 minutes of his birth; the Death Notice indicating 'premature birth' as the reason for death.
