After the death of Ray Newman, Sr., Melissa remarried Henry Haarer on August 25, 1945. No children were born to that marriage. Henry, son of August Sr. & Arune Haarer was born March 1, 1892 and died in May 1965.

- Melissa [Miller] Newman died one day before her sister, Bernice Viola [Miller] Gerber. Bernice's death from cancer was not unexpected, however, the death of Melissa (from our documentation) appears to have been totally unexpected.
- Ray Newman Sr. died one week before his youngest daughter, Doris, was born.
- Ray Newman, Jr. was taken care of by Ernest Jay and Mildred [Powell] Miller for a time after the death of his father. At 6 years of age he was taken "away" by some other family member (rumored to have been sent to boarding school in London). Ray Newman, Jr. grew up to be Chief of Police of the Gainesville, FL police department and was a member of The BLUE KNIGHTS® (a non-profit fraternal organization consisting of active and retired law enforcement men & women who enjoy riding motorcycles).
- Ray Newman, Sr. (1895-1925)was the son of David W. Newman (born about 1869) and Lizzie [nee unknown]. He had a sister, Edsla M. Newman (born abt. 1890). The 1910 U.S. Census of Kankakee, Kankakee County, IL lists the birthplace of David W. Newman as Scotland, and the birthplace of Lizzie as Canada. According to that census, David W. Newman was a carpenter, Lizzie worked at home, Edsla was a stenographer for a lumber company, and Ray Newman was in school.
