J.M. [sic] Miller, 47, died at his home 418 No. Seventh avenue this morning as a result of a stroke of paralysis. He had suffered a stroke about two years ago and when he was the victim of a second stroke a few days ago, he gradually became worse until he died. He leaves a wife and six children. He came here from a farm near Bonfield about five years ago. The funeral will probably be held Monday morning at St. Rose church.

The funeral of Norris Jay Miller, who died at his home, 418 No. Seventh Avenue, was held at St. Rose Church this morning. Mr. Miller died Saturday afternoon as a result of a stroke of paralysis. Norris Jay Miller was born in New York state, June 27, 1870. He attended the public schools until he was 16 years old. A part of his youth was spent on the farm and a part in the grocery business with his father, Jacob Miller. In 1891 he left his home in the Empire State and came to Illinois where his brother, Albert Miller, lived. For a time after coming here, he was with his brother in the restaurant business, in what is now the Big Four district. Leaving the restaurant business he became a blacksmith for the C.I & S at which trade he worked for seven years. He left the employ of the railroad in 1898 and for 17 years was a farmer. He retired from the farm in 1911 and he came to town. For two years he worked at Saddler's grocery. He left the employ of that firm in 1913 and became connected with the Grand Union Tea company. He worked with that company until 1914 when his health failed and forced him to retire. He married Hattie Merillat of Bonfield, Feb. 14, 1892. Eight children were born to them all of whom survive with the exception of Edith who is dead. His wife and the following children survive: Melissa, Irene, Bernice, Florence, Ernest, Freda, and Leo.

Norris left NY age 21 and arrived in IL in April 1891
He was a Blacksmith for 7 years
Norris rented a farm east of Kankakee (owned by Adam Heil) for one year then managed the farm of Michael Heil west of Kankakee for four years. During this time he was a crop and dairy farmer.
In 1901, Norris purchased 80 acres of land and moved there the following year.
